Seventeen

Penny got over her emotional outburst quickly as her brother mocked her.

“I knew you loved me. And to reinforce that, you should bake me some cookies!” Darian declared.

“I was worried!” Penny yelled and smacked her brother, which caused some surprise. Kit knew she wasn’t usually violent, but since coming on this trip, he’d noticed she was flinching less and being more outspoken.

“He’s fine. I want to know what he learned from the woman.”

“Other than she’s a con artist?” Darian stated with an arch of his brow.

“What makes you say that?” Penny asked.

Kit had known from the start that there was something off about Rosemary.

“She came on to me right away, despite telling me about her wonderful boyfriend.” Darian rolled his eyes.

“Maybe she’s into younger guys?” Kit played devil’s advocate.

“Seems unlikely.” Penny shook her head. “She told me in the kitchen she thought Kline was her soul mate and that he saved her. She also claimed he’s not behind the disappearances.”

Darian snorted. “She lied.”

“She sounded sincere.” Penny, though, seemed uncertain about her impression.

“That woman was playing us.” Kit agreed with Darian’s conclusion. “Obviously, our target is aware of our presence and sent her to gather intel.

“You think he already connected us to the skinny-dipping incident?” she asked.

“Wait, what?”” Darian exclaimed. “Is that why my sister showed up soaking wet and wearing your clothes?” Something that had been ignored in the confusion of having a visitor.

“Don’t be a prude. At least I found a way to get a sniff inside the house,” Penny casually dropped.

“You did what?” Darian bellowed.

“Calm down. What I did wasn’t any worse than you being nice to that woman and then walking her home.”

“You allowed this?” Darian growled at Kit, who lifted his hands.

“Don’t blame me for the fact your sister is headstrong.”

“I’m not as fragile as you both think,” she retorted.

Perhaps not, but Kit wanted to treat her as if she were.

“With our cover blown, should we move?” Darian asked.

“You and Penelope should go home.”

Darian and his sister replied in tandem, “Like fuck.”

A sigh escaped Kit as he raked his fingers through his hair. “This might get dangerous for you both.”

“We’re not leaving you alone!” Penny hotly declared.

“Gonna have to share the glory, foxy.” Darian winked.

Kit might finally snap, but it appeared he was stuck with the pair of them.

When they went to bed—her to the master bedroom, alone, and Darian taking the other room—Kit propped himself on the couch and called Luna.

“Shouldn’t you be in bed?” she said without a hello.

“Don’t you want an update?” was his riposte.

“Is it him?”

“No.”

“I hear a but.”

He glanced at the covered window. “There’s something not quite right. We met the suspect’s girlfriend. A Were, not from the local Pack, and yet, she lied about it and said she belonged. She did admit to knowing about the disappearances, but she’s claiming she doesn’t know what’s happening. Gave us a warning to leave.”

“You think she’s being coerced into giving up our kind?”

“I don’t know what her angle is, but I am thinking a meeting with her boyfriend is in order.
